New Zealand Government
New Zealand is an island nation that is situated in the south-western Pacific Ocean. It consists of two big landmasses- namely the North and South Island as well as many smaller islands. New Zealand is governed as a constitutional monarchy with a democracy ruled by the parliament. The constitution was formulated by the Constitutional Act in 1986 and is the main law of the country. The head of state is Queen Elizabeth II who is also named Queen of New Zealand.
On her behalf, New Zealand is ruled by the Governor-General. The person on this position is appointed with the special recommendation of the Prime Minister of the parliament. The current Governor-General is Anand Satyanand. He is an influential lawyer, judge and ombudsman from English, Indian and Fujian origins. The governor has the powers to appoint and dismiss ministers, and to dissolve parliament. According to the constitution his main task is to manage the formation of government from the party with majority in parliament.
The parliament is the main legislative body in the country. It is a one chamber body with 120 members. General elections are held every four years on the basis of mixed member proportionate representation system. The executive power is represented by the Executive Council. All of its members are obliged to be members of parliament. The Cabinet is the most senior policy making body in government and is led by the Prime Minister. The current one is John Key from the National Party. The Supreme Court of New Zealand is the highest judicial authority in the state and was established din 2004.
